Essential Oil of the Month: Geranium

Essential Oil of the Month: Geranium

Botanical name: Pelargonium graveolens
Aroma: Floral, green, rosy, softly herbaceous
Best known for: Balance, comfort, skin care and emotional wellbeing

Geranium essential oil is one of those beautiful oils that seems to bring everything back into balance. With its rosy, leafy scent, it sits somewhere between floral and fresh, making it a lovely choice for people who enjoy rose-like aromas but want something a little greener and lighter.

Traditionally, geranium has been used in aromatherapy for emotional steadiness, gentle comfort and skin care. It is often chosen when someone wants to create a calm, feminine, nurturing atmosphere — whether that’s at home, in a treatment room, or as part of a self-care ritual.

Why we love it

Geranium is wonderfully versatile. It blends beautifully with citrus oils such as sweet orange, bergamot and grapefruit, as well as grounding oils like cedarwood, frankincense and patchouli.

In skincare, geranium is often included in blends for mature, dry, combination or unsettled skin. Its balancing quality makes it popular in facial oils, body oils and natural beauty formulations.

Emotionally, geranium is often associated with softness, steadiness and reassurance. It can be a lovely oil to diffuse when you want a space to feel calm, welcoming and gently uplifting.

How to use geranium essential oil

In a diffuser:
Add a few drops to your diffuser to create a peaceful, floral atmosphere. Try blending it with sweet orange for a cheerful scent, or lavender for a softer evening blend.

In a body oil:
Add 1 drop of geranium essential oil to 5ml of carrier oil for a gentle 1% dilution. This can be used as a simple body oil or pulse-point blend. Essential oils should not be applied neat to the skin.

In a bath blend:
Mix 1–2 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath base before adding to the bath. Essential oils do not disperse properly in water on their own.

For a simple room blend:
Try geranium with lavender and orange for a comforting floral-citrus aroma.

Geranium essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest essential oils, and always dilute before applying to the skin. Use extra caution during pregnancy, breastfeeding, with children, pets, or if you have a medical condition. We would advise avoiding neat application and ingestion of essential oils, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Keep essential oils away from eyes, mucous membranes and children. If you are unsure whether an oil is suitable for you, ask a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare professional.
